An overview of pouching technology

In the area of packaging into stand-up pouches, the intermittent motion HFFS machines (Horizontal Form-Fill-Seal) represent the most common type of automatic machinery for large production.

Pouches are kept still during productive operations, such as pouch forming or filling with product, and then shifted to the next machine station for the following operation until the whole process is completed.

The cycle time and the number of stations of the machine, the dosing systems and the sealing times, as well as the physical properties of the packaging materials and the products to be packaged are essential concepts to understand of the functioning of traditional HFFS machines.

In this article, we will describe the parameters characterizing the intermittent technology, their impact on machines design, and the limitations they can impose on production speed which have led to the evolution towards the new continuous motion technology.
